A full rewire replaces the cabling, sockets, switches and consumer unit throughout a property. It is disruptive work: floorboards lift, walls are chased for new cable runs, and the house is generally easier to rewire while empty or mid-renovation than while lived in.

Houses wired before the 1980s are the usual candidates, particularly those still on rubber or fabric-sheathed cable, fitted with a rewireable fuse board rather than MCBs and RCDs, or with too few sockets for how the house is actually used. Sockets that are warm to the touch, persistent tripping, or scorch marks are all reasons to have an installation assessed.

A rewire is notifiable work. It must be carried out by a registered electrical contractor, and you should receive a completion certificate at the end. Keep it: it matters for insurance and for any future sale. Cost is driven mainly by the number of rooms and circuits, the finish standard, and how much making good is included, so confirm whether plastering and redecoration are inside the quote or outside it.
