Guttering in Co. Wicklow

Rainwater goods do an unglamorous job in a climate that tests them constantly: catch what runs off the roof and put it into a drain rather than down the wall. When they stop, the evidence appears on the building before anyone looks up. A green stripe or dark stain running down render, a damp patch on an inside wall that has nothing to do with plumbing, or water sheeting over the front of a gutter in heavy rain all point at the same place.

Gutter, downpipe, fascia and soffit work as one assembly, which is why they tend to be quoted together. The brackets fix into the fascia, so where the timber behind has rotted the run is no longer fixed to anything sound, and hanging new gutter on it repeats the problem. uPVC comes in jointed lengths with a gasket at each union, which is where leaks tend to start. Aluminium is often formed on site into a single continuous length with no joints along the run. Cast iron still suits older and protected buildings. Whichever is used, the fall to the outlet and the spacing of the brackets decide whether the gutter works or sags, and the downpipe should discharge into a gully rather than onto the ground beside the foundation.

This is work at height, covered by Part 4 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, and the Health and Safety Authority names gutter clearing specifically. Ask how access is being managed and confirm public liability insurance. Cost follows the length of the run, the number of storeys, the material, and whether fascia and soffit are replaced at the same time.

Common questions

Is my damp patch caused by the gutter?

It often is, particularly where the patch is on an outside wall, appears at the same height each time and gets worse in prolonged rain rather than in cold weather. Water overshooting a blocked gutter or leaking from a joint saturates the wall repeatedly. Watching the gutter during heavy rain is the quickest diagnostic there is.

uPVC or aluminium?

uPVC is widely stocked, easy to repair in sections, and joins every few metres at a union, which is where most leaks start. Aluminium is commonly rolled on site into one continuous length so a long run has no joints at all, and it holds its shape better on wide spans. The right answer depends on the run length, the look you want and the budget.

Do the fascia and soffit have to be replaced as well?

Not always, but they should be inspected, because the gutter brackets fix into the fascia. If the timber behind is soft or rotten, new gutter fixed to it will sag or pull away. A roofer should be able to tell you what state it is in once the old gutter is off, so agree beforehand how that is priced if it turns out to need doing.

How often should gutters be cleared?

At least once after leaf fall, and more often where there are overhanging trees or where moss is shedding off the roof slope above. Moss is the more common culprit on Irish roofs, and it collects at the outlet rather than spreading along the gutter, so an apparently clean gutter can still be blocked where it matters.
