Fuse Board Upgrade in Co. Galway

3 businesses offering fuse board upgrade across Co. Galway.

The fuse board, or consumer unit, is where the incoming supply is split into the circuits that feed the house, and where the protective devices that disconnect a faulty circuit live. Older boards built around rewirable fuses offer no protection against electric shock from a fault to earth, which is what an RCD is for, so upgrading is as much about shock protection as about tidiness.

The usual triggers are an old board with rewirable fuses or no RCD, a board with no spare ways when a new circuit is needed for a shower or an EV charger, nuisance tripping, or signs of heat damage around the board. A house sale or an insurance inspection often prompts it too. Sometimes the board is only part of the story: if the wiring behind it is rubber or fabric insulated, replacing the board alone leaves the real problem in place, and a full or partial rewire is the honest answer.

In Ireland this is not general handyman work. Replacing a fuse board is restricted electrical work under the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 (Restricted Electrical Works) Regulations 2013, so it must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor registered with Safe Electric, who then issues a Completion Certificate confirming the installation conforms to the national wiring rules, I.S. 10101. Keep that certificate: it is what a solicitor, insurer or future buyer will ask for. You can check a contractor's registration on the Safe Electric register before booking.

Common questions

Does a fuse board upgrade have to be certified?

Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is restricted electrical work, so it must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor registered with Safe Electric, who issues a Completion Certificate on finishing. Keep it — it is the document a solicitor, insurer or buyer will look for later.

How long does the job take, and will the power be off?

A straightforward board change is commonly a few hours to most of a day, and the supply is off for much of it. If circuits turn out to be unlabelled or faults are found once the old board is opened up, testing each circuit adds time, so plan for the power being off for the day.

Why does my RCD keep tripping after the upgrade?

A new board with RCD protection will reveal faults an older board simply ignored, most often moisture in an outdoor circuit or a failing appliance element. That is the protection working rather than a fault in the new board, and the electrician should isolate which circuit is responsible.

Do I need a rewire as well?

Not always, but the board and the wiring are separate questions. If the existing cabling is modern PVC and in good condition, a board change on its own is reasonable. Where rubber or fabric insulated wiring is found, a new board will not fix it, and the electrician should tell you that before quoting.
