Fitted Wardrobes in Co. Kildare
7 businesses offering fitted wardrobes across Co. Kildare.
The argument for a fitted wardrobe over a freestanding one is volume. A built-in run goes to the ceiling instead of stopping short of it, sits tight to the walls at both ends, and can be taken into the shallow return beside a chimney breast or under a sloped ceiling where nothing bought in a box will ever fit. The dust trap above and the dead gap beside a freestanding unit simply stop existing. What makes that possible is the same thing that makes it skilled work: rooms are not square, walls lean, and ceilings are rarely level along a whole run, so the joinery has to be cut to the room rather than to a drawing.
Most of the value, though, is in the part nobody sees from the doorway. The internal layout decides whether the wardrobe is genuinely useful, and it is worth working out from what you actually own: how much full-length hanging you need against how much can be double hung, whether shelves are deep enough to be useful and shallow enough that things do not disappear behind other things, and where drawers sit. Drawers are the detail most often got wrong, because a drawer positioned without thought fouls a hinged door or a door frame and can only be opened with the door swung fully back. Door type is the other structural decision: sliding doors need no clearance in front, which can settle the matter in a narrow room, but the track assembly takes real depth off the inside and you can only ever reach part of the opening at once.
Before booking, establish whether the wardrobe is being built on site or supplied as units and scribed in, because that changes both the timeline and how well it will cope with an uneven wall. Agree who is filling, priming and painting, whether skirting and coving are being cut around or removed and reinstated, and confirm the internal layout on a drawing with dimensions rather than in conversation. Cost follows the length of the run and the ceiling height, the number of drawers and internal fittings, whether doors are hinged or sliding, and the finish.

Common questions
Sliding doors or hinged doors?
Sliding doors win when the room is tight, because they need no swing space in front and let you put a bed or a chest of drawers close to the wardrobe. The trade-offs are that the track and door assembly consume some internal depth, and you can only ever open half or a third of the front at a time, which is mildly annoying every day. Hinged doors give you the whole opening at once and a shallower loss of depth, but they need clear floor space to swing into.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It is normal rather than a problem, and it is most of what you are paying a joiner for. The wardrobe is built or set plumb and level, and the gap between it and the wall is closed with scribed panels and fillers cut to follow the actual wall line. The mark of good work is that you cannot tell which of those gaps was large. This is also the main practical difference between fitted joinery and a flat-pack unit pushed against the wall, which simply leaves the gap showing.
Is a site-built wardrobe better than modular units fitted in?
Neither is automatically better and both are done well and badly. Site-built joinery deals with awkward geometry more easily, since everything is cut in place, and it suits sloped ceilings and chimney returns. Modular carcasses scribed in are usually quicker on site, produce less dust and mess in the house, and can be more consistent in finish. What matters more than the method is whether whoever is doing it is measuring the room properly and telling you where the compromises will land.
Can a wardrobe be fitted under a sloped attic ceiling?
Yes, and it is one of the places fitted joinery earns its cost, because the space under a slope is otherwise close to useless. The usual approach is full-height hanging where the ceiling is high enough and drawers, shelves or low-level pull-outs running under the slope, sometimes with doors cut to the rake. Be clear at the design stage about where the head height actually runs out, since that line rather than the wall decides what the interior can be.
