Decking in Co. Dublin

17 businesses offering decking across Co. Dublin.

A deck is a structure that happens to have a walking surface on top, and almost every deck that fails early fails in the part you cannot see. The boards are the cheap, replaceable, visible layer; the posts, bearers and joists underneath are what decide whether the thing is still solid in ten years, whether it feels reassuring underfoot or springs slightly when someone walks across it, and whether it is quietly rotting while looking perfectly presentable. A deck built on an adequate frame with mediocre boards can be renewed. A deck with beautiful boards on an inadequate frame has to come up.

The single biggest factor in how long it lasts is air. Timber that can dry out survives; timber held against damp ground with no ventilation underneath does not, no matter what it was treated with. That means clearance beneath the joists, a route for air to move across rather than into a sealed box, and gaps between boards that let water through instead of ponding on the surface. Material choice sits on top of that rather than replacing it. Pressure-treated softwood is the common option and takes a finish; hardwood is denser, heavier and longer-lived; composite will not rot and does not need oiling, but it still needs exactly the same frame beneath it, it moves noticeably with temperature so it has to be fixed with that allowed for, and it is better described as differently maintained than maintenance-free. Fixings matter more than people expect, since corroding screws will stain and loosen boards long before the timber gives out.

Before booking, ask about the substructure rather than the boards: what the joists are, how far apart they are spaced, what the deck bears onto at ground level, and how much clearance and ventilation there will be underneath. If the deck meets the house, ask how it is being detailed there, because that junction is where water gets held against a wall. A raised deck can have planning implications depending on its height and what it overlooks, so check with your local authority before building rather than after. Cost follows the area, how far the ground falls away beneath it, the material, and whether there is balustrade and stepping.

Common questions

Composite or timber?

Composite does not rot, does not need oiling and holds its colour, which is why people choose it, and the honest counterweight is that it costs more up front, moves with temperature so it must be fitted with expansion allowed for, and can get uncomfortably warm in direct sun. Timber costs less, can be sanded and refinished when it looks tired, and looks like timber because it is. Both need the same frame underneath, so the choice is about the surface and your appetite for maintenance rather than about how long the structure lasts.

Why does my deck bounce when I walk on it?

Almost always because the joists are spanning too far between supports, or are spaced too widely apart, for the size of timber used. It is a frame problem rather than a board problem, which is why relaying the boards changes nothing. It can sometimes be improved by adding intermediate support or noggins underneath, if there is access to get in there. It is worth taking seriously rather than living with, because deflection loosens fixings over time.

How long should a deck last?

There is no single answer, because the biggest variable is not the material but whether the structure can dry out. A well-ventilated deck with clearance underneath, laid so water drains through rather than sitting, and built with fixings that do not corrode, lasts a great deal longer than the same materials built tight to damp ground. Ask anyone quoting what the clearance and airflow underneath will be, and treat a vague answer as informative.

Do I need planning permission to build a deck?

It depends on the specifics, particularly how high it is raised and whether it overlooks neighbouring property, and it is not something to assume either way from what someone did down the road. Your local authority planning office is the place to confirm it for your site, and asking before the work is a short conversation while asking afterwards may not be. A ground-level deck and a raised platform with a view over a neighbouring garden are very different propositions.
